I am a Professor of African American Literature and Culture at Sam Houston State University and hold a Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Florida. I was a Cheryl A. Wall Postdoctoral Associate in African American and African Diaspora Literature at Rutgers University, where I developed the scholarly foundation that informs my memoir's political and literary frameworks. My first book, In Hush to Harbor: Black Sanctuary from Slavery to Trump's America, is forthcoming from Rutgers University Press in July 2026. I am a 2025 TEDx speaker, the founder of The Writer's Table at Kindred Stories in Houston, a cultural critic with a social media following of over 14.1K followers, storyteller, and a first-generation daughter.
