My name is Aleila Barton, and if there is one thing you should know about me, it's that I believe every person has a story worth telling.
I am a student at North Carolina A&T State University, where I study Social Work with a minor in Public Relations. As a first-generation college student, I understand what it feels like to navigate spaces that were never designed with people like me in mind. That experience has shaped the way I see the world and inspired my passion for serving others.
I am the middle child of a large family, a self-proclaimed yapper, and someone who has always been deeply curious about people. I love learning about different cultures, religions, perspectives, foods, traditions, and experiences. If there is something new to learn, chances are I want to know about it. I believe curiosity and empathy are some of the most powerful tools we have as human beings.
My long-term goal is to earn my master's degree and Ph.D. and become a therapist specializing in men's mental health. After losing two important male figures in my life to suicide, I became passionate about creating spaces where people feel safe enough to be vulnerable, seek help, and heal. I want to pour back into the communities and people who poured into me and dedicate my life to helping others navigate their own journeys.
Outside of academics, I enjoy creating content, sharing food reviews, crocheting, and finding creative ways to connect with others. Creativity has always been an important part of who I am, whether that's through writing, content creation, community engagement, or simply having meaningful conversations with people from all walks of life.
I have also been diagnosed with anxiety, something that has challenged me throughout my life. While there have been moments filled with panic attacks, uncertainty, and self-doubt, I have never allowed anxiety to define me or stop me from pursuing my goals. Instead, it has taught me resilience, self-awareness, and the importance of extending grace to both myself and others.
Attending an HBCU has strengthened me in ways I never imagined. It taught me the value of community, perseverance, and working hard even when someone else is working just as hard beside you. It reinforced the importance of showing up authentically and creating opportunities not only for yourself but for those who come after you.
More than any degree, title, or accomplishment, my greatest goal is to live a life rooted in purpose, love, and service. I hope to one day become a wife and mother and create a home built on support, understanding, and unconditional love.
At my core, I believe in being authentically yourself. The world is full of people with different backgrounds, experiences, and beliefs, and I think we all have a responsibility to approach one another with curiosity, empathy, and an open mind. Those values guide everything I do and continue to shape the person I strive to become every day.
